Design Sprint

Overview

This is a group project whose challenge was to find a solution to the problem that occurs in Spain, about the botellón.
The botellón is a massive gathering of young people, in open spaces of free access, to combine and drink alcoholic beverages that they have previously acquired in stores.
We needed to help parents to have more control over their children and how they are.

Empathize

Now that we have read the briefing on botellón, a term that describes the custom that appeared in Spain in the last decade of the 20th century, especially among young people, of gathering on public streets to socialize while consuming alcoholic beverages; it is up to us to find a solution, let’s get to work…

Sprint Questions

My group and I had to write down as many questions as possible to find out how we can use technology to end the drinking culture and give parents a tool to care for their children. When it came time to observe, we had a lot of questions at the Miro. I found this first contact with the team amazing as I alone was never going to get so many questions (ideas) and many heads think completely different things.

How might we…..?

Next we had to modify and classify all the questions and ideas, to clean up a bit since some of them were similar or repeated, and modify the beginning to How could we…? We started to organize and divide the task in order to move faster and in a more organized way.

Ready, everything in order…

Journeys

It consisted of describing the characters who were involved in this problem. Profiles for example of the teenager who went to a botellón, the parents, the neighbors who lived near the park… All those affected, this is necessary because we have to feel in their situation.

Dotmocrazy

After voting, we came up with the winning theme. And this is when we started to separate into two groups to look for the best solutions.

Define

We started that morning with the first task «Lightning demos». It consisted of researching about applications or tools that you think can help you in inspiration. It was very interesting since I had no idea of everything that existed, so this made it more attractive, I was learning. Each one of us started to make a moodboard with all the screenshots we had in Miro so we could share and disagree.

Next step, we all had our research finished, so we started to explain the inspirations we had found. After we have heard all the findings, it was time to start looking for future solutions by making wireframes to make it clearer.

Devise

After all the research we had done the day before, it was time for the Art Museum, where we each gave possible solutions, and then explained what the solution consisted of.

At the end we made the Thermal Map for voting, where the winning idea was that through an app with parental control and that allows you to have a device linked to another, you can have more control of the amount of alcohol you drank and if you exceed the maximum consumption you have a penalty: not being able to use the mobile phone except for specific things like self-punishment.
Now that we had everything clearer we needed to solidify the idea with a storyboard and from here we started a solo path each member of the group, where we could add some function.

Prototyping

Now I had to work alone and no longer in a team. To get a prototype and then be able to test it.
My main target would be the parents. It would be that when Jimmy, the son, left home, his mother (Laura) would be able to know how he was doing. If Jimmy drank too much alcohol, a notification would be sent to his mother.

Then Jimmy’s cell phone would stop working and he would only be able to call his mother or emergency phones.

Primary User - Parents

Objective: Help parents to have more control over their children.

Screen 1
Option to choose whether you are the parent or the child.

Screen 2
Enter the login data

Screen 3
Decide if you want to see your son/daughter health status, you also had other options but this time we were only going to focus on the breathalyzer.

Screen 4
Health statistics and breathalyzer, where you can see the maximum alcohol ratio you can reach and the level of what you have at that moment. If you click on the chevron you have the option to have more information.

CareFamily

Test

Now that I have the interaction to show, I have to get parents to tell them about the idea and do a survey to find out: What do you think about this idea? Would you like to be able to monitor your children, their health and the breathalyzer option using an app? If this app existed would you really use it? And many more questions. I managed to interview five people and get us going with the interaction.

Conclusions

After getting all this information and analyzing it, I could see if they were attracted to the idea, how they interacted and what they thought of the app.
The Design Sprint was very interesting, in only 5 days we had worked as a team and got a lot of information.
The vast majority would not use the app if it is focused on the control of the child, as it seemed excessive and they felt that it invades their privacy and zero confidence in them. But they would use it as an aid or a tool to share relevant information at specific times. Something curious and interesting was that some of them told me that they would use it when their children started to go out for the first time and if something happened to them, they found it useful to have that alarm to help them and know where they were immediately, or for example if they had been drinking and got into an unknown cab, to know the route they were taking.
I think if it was focused in another way it could have more potential as there was a lot of functionality that they liked. Focused for health, but for the whole family to use, with everyone’s consent and not for spying.

Futuribles

One of the next steps would be to talk to teenagers to know their point of view, because if this is an app for both parents and teenagers it is necessary to know what they feel and think about this app.

Thank you for reading this far! 💛
